On Aging -- Hosted by guest speaker Teleshia Q. Brimmer

<Q>
What programs do you offer?
<A>
At the New Orleans Council on Aging, the National Family
Caregiver Program offers In-Home Respite, Personal Care
Services, Adult Day Health Care, Institutional Respite,
and Assistance in Purchasing adult diapers and nutritional
supplements free of charge.
<Q>
How do you qualify for these programs?
<A>
In order to qualify for the Caregiver Program, the caregiver
must provide care to someone who is 60 or older living in
New Orleans Parish. The caregiver can be any age and does
not have to live with the caregiver or in Orleans Parish.
<Q>
How do you access Respite Care?
<A>
Once enrolled in the program, the caregiver has access to
all services under the program.
<Q>
What kind of financing is needed for respite care?
<A>
All services are free under the program. However, other
respite services outside of the New Orleans Council on Aging
may range from $10-$12 per hour.
<Q>Do
you have any new programs that will be available?
<A>
Our new program, that just started in October, 2004, is
called the Senior Rx Program that provides assistance with
free medications. For more information you can call our
office at 821-4121.
<Q>
How can I find out what other parishes offer?
<A>
Most Councils on Aging provide the same or similar services,
such as Meals on Wheels, Caregiver Assistance, and Homemaker
services. For more information you can contact the Governor's
Office of Elderly Affairs in Baton Rouge at 1-800-898-4910.
<Q>
Does Medicaid pay for adult day care?
<TB>
I'm not sure, but there is a web site called www.medicare.gov
which can tell you what Medicaid and Medicare covers. For
further questions, you can call the Medicaid office at 504-581-7591.
<Q>
What are the qualifying criteria for seniors to be able
to take advantage of the services that your organization
offers?
<TB> The
senior must be 60 or older and a resident of Orleans Parish.
<Q>
Do you have to apply for some sort of membership? And if
so, does it have to be in person? Are there any fees?
<TB>
To apply for any services at the agency, you can call the
office at 504-821-4121 and ask to speak to someone who works
in the program you are requesting. You do not have to request
services in person, however, a one-on-one interview is required
for most of the services. There are no fees charged for
services.
<Q> What
types of services can you offer seniors?
<TB> We
have several different programs that seniors can apply for
such as Meals on Wheels, Homemaker Services, the Senior
Companion Program, Dental Assistance and the National Family
Caregiver Program.
<Q>
What are Homemaker Services?
<TB>
The Homemaker Program provides assistance with housekeeping
duties, such as cleaning and laundry duties.
